Turning Unused Photographs and Outtakes into Art Pieces

I remember when I first started shooting; I would take thousands of photos per shoot. LOL, don’t laugh at me because I am sure most of you did as well. Whether we realized it or not, we were all subconsciously adhering to the infinite monkey theorem which states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. The same holds true on a much smaller scale. If we shoot a subject 1,000 times, we can almost guarantee that at least four or five of them will be very good shots.
Naturally, the more photo shoots you do, the less shots you take because all of those extra, unused, images eventually become a HUGE waste of time, energy, and resources. WRONG!
I mean, yes, do not take a huge amount of shots per shoot because it is a huge waste of time, energy, and resources, however, using your eye and capturing candid and yes, a small amount of outtakes can be very beneficial to you. You simply have to be creative and innovative. For example, I recently had a photo shoot with a model named Indica Rose who really hit the bottle of booze a little hard in our first shoot together. I took maybe 20 or 30 candid shots of her in various stages of her inebriation while waiting for lighting, make-up etc. Fast forward and I gathered a nice amount of other outtakes from other shoots we done together. Instead of just allowing these images to take up space on my hard drive? I put together a bunch of them around a “melancholy” theme and song that I found on some music station and created a very powerful and moving slide show using free Microsoft Movie Maker software. I recommend going on Youtube and contacting an artist first to obtain their permission (they almost all are willing as long as you link them and that is great for the both of you!) The production is clearly not stellar but it looks very professional and by placing the right images around the right lyrics it really does tell a very compelling visual and auditory story.
I can now take this little 3 minute video and post it on various social media websites such as Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr, Tumblr, even Pinterest and Smugmug. Those outtakes are now a very visible advertising tool, and brand development mechanism. What is the financial cost of making this very powerful tool and visually compelling piece of art? ZERO! They are simple outtakes; they are images sitting around on my hard drive taking up space and contributing nothing to my business or desire to express myself.
